Properties/Features of X-rays

X-rays were discovered accidentally but, its use is now very much valuable. We cannot see it by our naked eye because of its special features.

The following are the most important properties/features of the X-rays:-

1. X-rays are Electromagnetic Rays which behave as wave as well as particle.

2. X-rays are Invisible.

3. X-rays have Great Penetrating power.

4. Being Electromagnetic waves they are Electrically Neutral.

5. They can cause Ionization of Gases as they can remove orbital electron from Atom.

6. Their wave length ranges from 0.1Å  to 0.5Å having Energy level of 25KeV to 125KeV.

7. They travel with the speed of Light (3×10ms-1).

8. They travel in a straight line like visible rays.

9. They cause Fluorescence of certain crystals of calcium tungsten, barium platino cyanide, etc.

10. They cause photographic effect in silver halide crystal which is a chemical change.

11. They can cause chemical as well as biological changes by ionization and excitation.

12. X-rays are partially scattered by matter.
